Stocks climbed on Friday, resuming an upward movement that has carried markets to the highest levels in nearly a year.
Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was higher by about 45 points, trading at around 9835. The S&P 500 gained 0.5% amid gains in all its sectors and the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.4%.
Stocks ended modestly weaker Thursday, though the Dow industrials touched their highest intraday level since Oct. 7 and have seen strong gains for the week to date.
Among stocks to watch, Palm shares fell 0.5% after the company disclosed the release of the Pre device wasn't enough to pull Palm into the black in its most recent quarter. Shares of Palm competitors Research In Motion and Apple were slightly higher.
Huntington Bancshares said that it will sell $350 million of its common stock, having completed a separate $150 million stock-issuance program it started last week, as the Ohio-based bank continues raising capital. Its shares dropped 3%.
Unifi shares climbed 7% after the yarn maker boosted its guidance for fiscal first-quarter earnings. The company said business conditions in key segments have been better than expected, resulting in improved demand levels.
Overseas, the Nikkei 225 dropped 0.7% in Tokyo. Most European markets were modestly higher.
Crude-oil futures fell 45 cents to $72.02 a barrel, while the dollar rose against both the Japanese yen and the euro.
