Default Real Madrid Castilla 09-10 Season Preview

Its that time of year again folks, the Castilla season preview. This year we will do a run down of the coaches, the players, and the chance that Castilla get promoted this year, along with a highlight on some of the Real Madrid C players that have gotten Castilla numbers for the season. This year promises to be an exciting one, with the cantera again bulging with talented prospects, many of which will hope to impress enough for a shot at the first team or a loan/transfer to a Liga or Segunda side to further their career or improve their prospects for making the first team some day. Before we begin with player profiles, lets gain some perspective on the teams with interviews of their coaches.

Real Madrid Castilla’s new trainer Alejandro Menendez, who formerly coached the Juvenil team in 2005-2006 as well as having stints and Gijon and Celta Vigo as a youth coach, even taking the reins of the first team at Vigo briefly in 2008. He sat down for an interview with the official website. Here is my translation:

Alexander Menéndez begins a new stage in Real Madrid. Before like trainer of the Youthful one To and of Real Madrid C, he now confronts his more important challenge with the madridista club: to put itself to the position of Castile. “To return it is a challenge very attractive tuna and, not only by the return, but by the objective that is to train to a great equipment as it is Castile”, he says in his first interview to means of the Club. It is your second stage in Real Madrid, that demonstrates that confidence in you is had and in your work.
The Club has demonstrated a great credibility in me and to return is a challenge very attractive tuna and, not only by the return, but by the objective that is to train to a great equipment as it is Castile. In these first days of physical work in trainer he is a little to the margin… Yes. In the preseason we tried to have resistance, to go preparations, and the first days always there are many things that to do. We want that when takes the equipment it is all already in its site. Also it will be necessary to ask people something to him of patience… We want to be marking time to create a style and parameters.
We will look for a Castile that matches good and with a great progression when the year finishes. I am sure that we will be there above in the end, that will be signal that we have done something important during the year. And the formation of the players is important… The formation of the players is important and goes of the hand with the competition. We love players who form and who also end up reaching a good level of competition. It is necessary to consider that in this club comes to compete and, within principles, to always win.
And you are customary to win. In your previous stage with the Youthful one To, with Real Madrid C and now with Castile…? That is the way that all we want. There are rivals of much prestige in the group, nowadays much information is handled and there is no easy party. We are going to try to be faithful same and to be an equipment that enters a dynamics of good game. Something difficult in a league like the one of Second B, with rivals like Oviedo.
Yes, she is difficult and treacherous. There are equipment and players very consolidated in the category, very competitive, who do not play tuna but they secure results and they finish in the positions of above. To be in that competitive dynamics entails to know how to play before these equipment and only not to handle aspects of the ball. It is also tried to gain office.
Real Madrid C’s new trainer, Jose Manuel Diaz, also had a quick interview with the official site. Here it is in my modest translation:
Jose Manuel Diaz returns to the Club to become position of Real Madrid C. The one that outside player of the quarry “during eleven years” and trainer returns with the intention “to raise the greater number from players Castile”. A man of Club that returns to the place where it grew up: “I have here been during many years” It is your second stage in Real Madrid. One returns deluded here. Yes.
For me it is to return where there am servant, I have here been during many years. I was training some years in the old Sport City and to return is something like being very contented. When they gave the possibility you of returning, you did not think it to you. By all means. To come here is to come to the best possible site, with these facilities, knew that them but that it does not get to enjoy. It is my opportunity to do it. And with an important challenge with the second branch. Real Madrid C is a challenge by the proximity with Castile and because it supposes the previous step of youthful to Third, that it is always a complicated category.
It is an important competitive change. It is the most important jump in the quarry. Where they must learn to compete. Yes. The formation goes united to the competition and more in a club like this one, in which you have the obligation to win and that is obstinate from small. They are always customary to be above in the classification, but in this category that is something very complicated. It is a great competitive jump. And it is the previous passage to Castile, to the first equipment… It is a little while in that they are near his dream of being soccer players, but not yet have nothing. One begins to see that it is possible, but still must gain it.
How works Manolo Diaz? Treatment to instill the values that instilled to me here like player. I was 11 years in this house, almost all the equipment, and will try to transmit everything what I learned. My intention is to try to remove all the players who are possible to me for Castile and, hopefully, for the first equipment.
Informative enough, and I like that both guys have had some previous experience at other youth clubs, as it brings in some fresh ideas to the Real setup. Menendez will be expected to push for promotion of course and at the least do better then last years 6th place finish, even though that position is a tad misleading. Castilla were in the race for a promotion playoff spot until the last day, when they lost away from home and missed out on the chance at promotion. Menendez is going to have to do it with a rather depleted lineup compared to previous years. I though last years Castilla team was a little weak, but this year it looks even weaker unfortunately, as a generational gap developed after the glorious team of De la Red, Granero, Negredo, Bueno, Mata etc. all left fairly early in their development and many of the C team players were still not ready to make the step up.
Some recent transfer news has Celta Vigo hot shot Rodri in the orbit of Real, while ex-Castilla player Juanr Forlin seems to be on his way to Espanyol since Real will not execute a first option on him. Thats pretty much it, as the five players brought in this season were done so in a pretty rapid fashion and are profiled below.
Looking at the squad, you would have to wonder who besides the usual suspects is going to step up for Castilla this year, given that players like Alberto Bueno and Christoph Schorch have left to pursue their careers. Those two are the only players to have left the team surprisingly, except for two loan returns in Santiago Villafane to Boca and Kabamba to Standard Liege, so it seems some of the dead weight the team had last year is sticking around. Lets get down to business here and start doing some player profiles then!
Adam Szalai:

One of the best, if not the best player on the team, and I am a little surprised that he still is with the squad. Top scorer last year with Alberto Bueno, each scoring 16 goals and earning international attention and a call up to the full Hungarian national team. He has been rumored to be on the radar of several Bundesliga clubs, and it seems it may be his final destination before the transfer window closes in September. Not that I do not want him to stay, as he is a goal scoring machine, tall and great in the air, but technical with the ball and smart in his off the ball movement and positioning. A poacher if there ever was one, his finishing is very mature, and he would do well in the Bundesliga, or in La Liga for that matter. I had high hopes for him after he was named in the Champions League roster last year, but he never made a first team appearance to many peoples bemusement.
Szalai should move on to further his own career, because I dont think third division football for another will help him develop. Beside winning games, thats what the Castilla team is all about. And I think he has developed as much as he can with the team. If he stays we have a shot at promotion of course, but if he leaves, its for his own good.
Javier Acuna:

Acuna was a big prospect way back in 2004, when he was bought by Cadiz as a way to get out of the Segunda and back up to La Liga. The did just that, but Acuna never made to many appearances in La Segunda that year as Cadiz finished first. Cadiz unfortunately pulled a Mijatovic and bought him with their foreign player quota filled already (lower leagues only allow two) and he sat out a year before he played a first La Liga games, had a loan at Salamanca and in four years in Spain amassed 43 appearances and a paltry 3 goals. Imagine my shock when he was actually picked up by Castilla this past winter.
Well the second half of the season, Acuna was great. 17 appearances and 6 goals, usually from the wing but sometimes with a more central role. Now 21 going on 22, this is his make or break campaign where he shows La Liga scouts what he has got. I dont think he will ever make it to the first team, so his best bet is to work towards a contract somewhere else. But he could be a key piece to the Real team this year, and hopefully he can up his goal total a bit to make up for the loss of Alberto Bueno.
Javi Hernandez:

Hernandez has been with the Castilla team since the start of last year, and operates as a central midfielder, a box to box type. At 20, he still has a year or two to develop, and the jury is still out on whether or not he will make the grade, but from early signs I would have to say no. Real has a rash of central midfielders, so he will have a tough time carving out a starting spot this year. Off the bench he is effective of course, but this will be a year of learning for him. He will make 20 or so appearances, usually from the bench though, so he will be a valuable player for the team. He seems to be more suited for say the Premier League as he runs hard, tackles hard and is good in the air. A physical player that has a shorter passing range then a typical Real Madrid center midfielder would need. He has chipped in with a few goals over the years though, so I give him credit for that.
Ruben Ramos:

Ruben Ramos is an Atletico canterano who was released from the club when his contract expired, despite being Atletico B’s top scorer with 9 goals last season, and a Spain u-19 international. Something fishy went on there, and my best guess is that he wanted to much money or a place in the first team so he was not renewed. But that is out gain, as he was brought in to replace Alberto Bueno as the secondary striker, and so far he has not disappointed, with a few goals in preseason and one during the very first inter-squad practice match. He could be a revelation this season if he stays healthy, and adds a great deal of quality next to Szalai that the team would have lacked with the loss of Bueno. Between Acuna, Szalai, Ramos and Juanfran/Cristian, we have a very strong striker core. Even if we loose Szalai, we should be able to cope and Ramos is a big reason why.
Juanfran:

Juanfran, like Ruben Ramos, is a local lad who grew up in the Getafe cantera and was bought this past season by Real. Last year he was playing on loan at Vilarreal B, who gained promotion to the Segunda in a very successful season. He also played one senior game under Laudrup in the UEFA cup, so he has a little bit of experience. He was considered one of Getafe’s best canteranos, so he comes to us highly rated and with a good youth CV.
I am unsure if he will get a whole lot of playing time with Szalai at the club still, although he is capable of playing on the wings like Acuna. I think that he will be starting on the wings more then upfront as it suits his style of play better, and so far in preseason he has been on the left, so some competition for Palanca.
Juanan:
Another new recruit, Juanan comes to Castilla from Fabril, the Deportivo cantera. He made 1 appearance in the Intertoto Cup and 1 in the UEFA cup this past season for Depor and was tipped to step up to the first time this season at some point. A strong center back, he has been brought in as a direct replacement for Schorch, and possibly Agus, to partner Gary and Nacho of the C team. He is also highly rated, and probably the best out of the four recruits that we had this offseason. Id expect him to be used frequently this season, but Nacho is a very talented center back as well, so there will be competition for a spot next to Gary in the defense.
Cristian Lopez Santamaria:

Cristian is very highly rated after two very strong seasons with Alicante B and the Alicante first team, where he made 3 appearances scoring once last season in the Segunda. He is also 20, and may have the most to learn out of all the new recruits because he comes from a smaller club. I have never seen him play nor heard anything out of the ordinary about besides a few Alicante fan pages, so my best guess is that he squad depth at least for the time being.
David Mateos:

David Mateos was being touted as a first team player back in 2007 when Schuster first took a look at him. Since then the utility man has played several games for Castilla over the past two years in both a defensive midfield role and as a center back. Because of his versatility he has always had a good amount of playing time and usually been effective if unspectacular in his game, but he has never shown as a real prospect at either position. This season he will again continue to be a utility man, but this will probably be his last with Castilla as he looks set to be released into the wild next season. At 22, its probably best for his career anways.
Javier Modrego Casado:

Javi Modrego was supposed to be the next Xabi Alonso. A promising central midfielder with Numancia and then Valladolid B that made 12 appearances for the Spain u-19 in 2007, and was in the Spain u-19 squad at the 2007 European Cup and was at first loaned to Real in 2007, and then bought permanently in 2008. Modrego has made 24 appearances for Real in the past two years, without any goals. Some have said he has been transformed in to a winger, which I am unable to substantiate, but it could be plausible. I had my eye on him last year for some progress to be made, but he has not really done anything to warrant a first team appearance or even show he is a Liga quality player as of yet. Maybe this season he can step up, but I would assume he is probably on the outer with the team as is.
Pedro Mosquera:

Mosquera is the vice-captain of the Castilla team, and has been with Real his whole life. A skilled central player, he can operate in midfield, but he is often best used as an attacking midfielder who bursts forward with great effectiveness. Not as cultured a through ball extraordinaire as say Guti or Granero, but his long range shooting is fantastic as evident in the video above. Im still a little surprised he is with the team still given his age, 21, and his talent. He has been with Castilla since 2006, as he was accelerated through the ranks with his talent, and he made appearances for both the u-17 and u-19 teams, but his last appearance for Spain came in 2007. Since then his talents have matured, but it seems some of the hype on him has worn off. He is still a good player, but like several of the guys in the Castilla team, he does not have the talent to make it to the first team.
This should be his last season with Castilla, if he does not move on earlier. I would not begrudge him a move, watch the video and you can see there is value there.
Fran Rico:

Fran Rico came to the Castilla team last summer from Pontevedra or some small team after some impressive displays, and he started out really well, impressing in preseason but succumbing to an ACL tear before he was able to get into the season long groove. It was a terrible lose, and it robbed the team of their creative winger, although in his absence Palanca stepped up. Rico is a very talented, very fast player, but I do have a feeling the knee injury may have robbed him of a step or two, and he is still not fit enough to play in the preseason. Its a pity to, because I rated him very highly. He will continue to recover and should be a great boost to the squad once he does return, but it seems unless he really comes on like gangbusters, his chance at the first team is limited. Pity too.
Jose Zamora:
Gahh!! I know very little about him beyond his past clubs were Espanyol and Eibar. Sorry!
David Vazquez:
Damnit, likewise!
Chema Anton:

Chema battling new team mate Ruben Ramos last year in a mini-derbi Madrileno.
Ohh Chema, where have you gone? You were with the first team last season for their trip to Colombia as a backup to Marcelo at left back, and then you disappeared. No further call ups, and you lost your place in the Castilla team to hot shot Marcos Alonso. What happened? Whatever it was, he is still young, at 20, to recover and have a good season. Thing is, Marcos Alonso is good, real good. And I do not think Anton is going to be able to dislodge Alonso out of his starting berth. It happens, but where does he go from here?
Javier Velayos:

Velayos got to enjoy Miguel Torres goofing around during preseason in Ireland this year. That picture is probably the only time I have seen Negredo smile since he has been back. Velayos was also with the first team for the end of last season, as Juande wanted to take a close look at him. A right back by trade, he has been advancing through the ranks for awhile now, and when it seemed like Daniel Opare would be the starting right back last year, Velayos got the job and he performed well. Even when young hot shot Luis Hernandez was called up from the C team as backup after Opare got injured, Velayos stuck it out. But now he is at a bit of a cross roads like Szalai, Mosquera, Acuna and a few others. Training with the first team was great experience, but is he better then another season in the third division?
Like his partner in crime on the opposite flank, Chema Anton, he may end up suffering a relapse in form this year with the lower level competition. I would really like to see him get loaned or sold with the traditional buy back clause, because he is a good player. But even then, we have Ramos, Torres and Arbeloa at right back, so is there any room for him in the first team anyways? Sadly, no, but when two of your right backs are already canteranos and Ramos is a surrogate canterano, I think it softens the blow for me. Velayos will be a decent player one day, mark my words.
Miguel Palanca:

Palanca had an incredible debut last year against Barcelona, playing very well and showing that he could mix it up with the big boys. He then came off the bench again in a 1-0 win against Valencia, and we all remember how he was bloodied like Terry Butcher from an elbow to the head but played on. I love this kid because he has heart, and plays with it on his sleeve. Adept at crossing and jinking his way in to the box, he is a Liga quality player that unfortunately wont get a chance at La Liga this season as he has been loaned out to Castellon in the Segunda, probably after Juanfran had such a strong preseason. I wish him all the best though.
Alipio:

Here is the pearl of the academy who is not Spanish. Notice I had to qualify that statement, because there are some equally talented players, but none have the room for growth that Alipio has at 17. Already having played for Rea’s Juvenil A and C teams, Alipio has also played for the Castilla team twice, scoring against Real’s first team in an inter-squad scrimmage last winter during an international break. He can be a world class player one day, he just needs time to develop properly, and I think so far Real has managed his games well. He will be in the Castilla team this year, but I think he will make a few appearances for the C team as well. He has a ton of potential, so keep an eye out for him in two or three years for the first team.
Raul Ruiz:

Raul Ruiz is already an accomplished player despite his tender age of 19. He has managed ten senior appearances for Hercules in the Segunda last year with 1 goal, and five appearances and a goal for the u-19 Spanish team against England in a friendly. He also was picked for the u-21 team way back in November when he first made his debut for Hercules. He comes to Real as a third or fourth striker behind Acuna and Szalai, competing with Ramos and Cristian for a spot up front. He may come on more towards the end of the season, but lets be patient with him, because like Cristian, he has to transition to a new, big club which can be difficult for young lads.
Luis Hernandez Rodriguez:

A left back that was promoted last season to the Castilla team after a strong performance with the u-19 Spain team that won European Cup in 2008. I hilariously mistook him for a player named Alvaro Lopez in my Castilla preview last season, for reasons still unknown to me. Alvaro Lopez is a C team player currently, so I see where the confusion came from. Anyways, he was C team captain before he moved up, but he was injured for most of last season and made only a few appearances. It seems he has lost his place to Javi Velayos and Daniel Opare last year, so it will be up to him to come back strong from his injury. So far in preseason he has started most of the games over Opare, so I can only assume this will continue into the season. He is a good player, but like Javi Velayos and painfully, Miguel Torres before him, he will have a tough time breaking the starting job in the first team with Sergio Ramos and now Arbeloa ahed of them.
Daniel Opare:

Opare is a freak of nature, incredibly strong and fast at a young age, he seems almost to developed physically for his own good. His composure on the ball and crossing still are seen as to weak, while his defensive awareness and positioning are a work in progress. He was a raw kid when Real bought him straight out of Ghana after some impressive performances for the u-17 team and a full Ghana cap. He has yet to establish himself as the first choice right back, but he is performing well enough to suggest he is developing. I see him being loaned to a French team in the future to further his development. Much like Luis Hernandez, it will be tough for him to make the first team, but at 18 he still has a few years yet.
Gary Kagelmacher:

Gary has already made his first team debut and did very well against Osasuna last season. Why he is still with the Castilla team is beyond me, as I think he should be with the first team, but with the purchase of Albiol that was always going to be difficult. He is going to form a solid partnership with Juanan or Nacho this year, but like a few of the players in the team, such as Tebar, Mosquera and Szalai, it seems better for their careers if they take the plunge and go for it with a different team. I like Gary, and I think that if Perez did not spend so much money he probably would have been in the first team this year, but these are circumstances out of his control.
Gorka:
I still have an old article from AS on Gorka, who they dubbed the ‘new Mata’. Injuries have barred him from showing any real potential, and even though he occasionally pops up with a lightning quick run down the flank and goal, he just is not as consistent as he needs to be largely because of injuries. I will stop short of writing him off, but lets face it, he will be one of many promising young players to show up on a tiny regional side, make a move to a big clubs cantera and never flourish. It happens all the time, so lets just move on.
Marcos Tebar:

The captain of the Castilla team, he has been in the team since 2007 and has been a key component for the center of midfield. Probably lest talented then De la Red or Granero, he performs a more organizing function in middle, with ball winning, breaking up plays and simple distribution a hall mark of his game. Pellegrini used him once in preseason but he has not seen any time since then, so I do not know if he will make the jump this year, but he is a player that despite his obvious personal qualities, lacks the skill needed to play for Real. He could be a good player in the Segunda though, so expect him to make a move eventually.
Palanca, Velayos, Tebar and Agus trained with the first team this off season, and it seems that only Vealyos and Tebar will remain with the Castilla team. Agus is 23 and so would count against some rule for reserve teams or something like that, and he will probably be sold before the window closes, if he has not already.
Players granted Castilla numbers who will start the season with the C team or lower:
GK Tomás (Real Madrid C)
DF Nacho (Real Madrid C)
FW Jesús Berrocal (???)
MF Samu (Juvenil A)
MF Pedro Aldea (Real Madrid C)
MF Ávaro (Real Madrid C)
DF Rubén Molero (Juvenil A)
FW Denis (Juvenil A)
MF Juan Carlos (Real Madrid C)
These names and associated teams may be a little out of date, which further points to just how difficult it is to get news on players below the Castilla team. Nacho, Juan Carlos and Alvaro have played games in the preseason with Castilla, while Tomas was with the first team in preseason for a bit and he is in the Castilla team now. Berrocal was with Racing Santander last year on loan, and he made his Liga debut with a goal, so I dont expect him to stay with the C team all year. Samu and Denis have been tearing it up in front of goal for the C team this past year and preseason, and I am pretty sure Samu played for Castilla during an injury crisis last year.
In other cantera news, the following players from the C and Juvenil teams have been called up for international duty at the u-17 World Cup in Nigera in October: el portero Ricardo Alonso, el defensa Daniel Carvajal, los centrocampistas Pablo Sarabia, Álex Fernández y Kamal Mohamed Abdesalan, y el delantero Rubén Sobrino. Great news for all of them, and a proud day for Madridistas of course. Pablo Sarabia can be considered an automatic starter for the NT after his displays in the Club World Cup this past year. Sobrino and Fernandez will probably have a part to play as well, while Ricardo Alonso goes as a second or third keeper I believe. I have never heard of Kamal Mohamed Abdesalan, so it will be interesting to see him in action if he gets to play. Way to represent Real lads!
And thats that. I did not go over the keepers because, well nothing has changed much from last year. Adan is with the first team but because we have so many players he is still registered to Castilla. Which means Felipe Ramos and Tomas Mejias will fight for the starting job, although peculiarly Adan has played in many of the preseason games with Castilla still. Let me know what you think!

We have the best youth squad in Spain. Last season 8 of our 10 youth teams have won Spanish League. That is great!
